Tributes are being paid to one of the longest-serving independent traders in the Shannonside region who passed away yesterday.

Edward 'Ned' McAvoy, who was in his 90s, was well known throughout the region for selling cabbage plants at the market square in Longford and Mohill in Leitrim for over sixty years.

The Ballinalee man also successfully challenged efforts by the former Longford Urban Council to remove the casual trading rights area in the centre of the town over twenty years ago.

In a Facebook post today, the Longford farmers market has described him as a gentleman and someone who took his battle for traders to the courts and won - which the group say they will always be grateful for.
