The statue remembers Longford's key role in the introduction of the grey squirrel to Ireland over 100 years ago.

A new public art project has been unveiled in Newtownfobes today marking Longford's long association with the squirrel.

The sculpture known as Mr. Nuts is located at the entrance of Castleforbes and is part of the Iora Nua initiative.

North American grey squirrels were first released into Ireland on the grounds of Castleforbes in 1911 after a wedding.

The unveiling marks the first of three art pieces to be erected in each of Longford's Municipal Districts.

The giant fibreglass sculpture was developed by Kilkenny based artist Tom Duffy and was unveiled today by Cathaoirleach Peggy Nolan.
