The artic chill is taking hold for a couple of days

Temperatures dipped as low as minus 7 degrees Celsius in parts of the midlands overnight.

Mount Dillon in Roscommon is still  recording a temperature of -7 degrees celcius at 9am this morning, while the next coldest in Ballyhaise in Cavan is showing a -6 reading.

Motorists are being urged to drive with care this morning due to icy stretches and frost which will be slow to clear.

A Status Yellow low temperature ice warning is in place until midday.

Snow fell in parts of Kerry, Cork, Sligo and Donegal last night- with some schools in Donegal remaining closed this morning due to poor road conditions.

Met Éireann says the current Arctic airflow will bring sharp to severe frosts and icy stretches until Thursday, along with showers of hail, sleet, snow and freezing fog.
