The station was decommisioned in December of 2020

Further plans have been lodged for the site of a former peat burning power plant in the region.

EirGrid PLC are seeking significant energy infrastructure at the defunct Lough Ree power plant in Lanesboro. The site of the former power plant has been the subject of a number of planning permissions for energy works due to the connection it houses on site to the national grid.

The company is seeking to construct a Gas Insulated Switchgear compound on the site, featuring a GIS building with 1600 metre square building, internal access track and 15 car parking spaces. Switchgears protect and control the power supply, and can disconnect from the supply during a fault.

Included in the planning application is the construction of 3 new underground joint bays, a 20 metre Line Cable Interface Mast and a 12 metre high gantry tower. Plans also call for the redevelopment of the existing substation including the decommissioning of the  plant and the modification of underground cables serving the substation.

County planners will make their decision on the application in August.
