Monument to Ranelagh burial site unveiled

The site was excavated during an archaeological dig between 2015 and 2016 and the earliest in situ burial discovered was that of an older female who dated back to AD 428 to 601.

A monument to mark an ancient Roscommon burial site was erected on the N61 just before Christmas.

The monument, which was produced by local sculptor Mark Feeley, commemorates the forgotten souls of a nearby townland called Ranelagh. The site was excavated during an archaeological dig between 2015 and 2016 and the earliest in situ burial discovered was that of an older female who dated back to AD 428 to 601. Speaking on Let's Talk, Marie Gillooly, a member of the Roscommon Town Team sub-committee, explained the significance of the discovery for the local community:
