Gardai are to fully investigate the circumstances around the erection of a marquee for a post wedding party in Longford this week.

Over 100 people are believed to have gathered at the marquee adjacent to a halting site off the N5 Strokestown road on Wednesday evening .

The controversial marquee remains in place this morning in Longford town following a Traveller wedding on Wednesday afternoon.

Longford County Council and Gardai were made aware on Tuesday afternoon that a marquee was being rejected on council-owned land to accommodate guests, and the local authority sought, and was granted, a Circuit Court order to remove the structure.

Discussions took place on Wednesday between the families, Gardai and the Council without a resolution and Gardai maintained a 'watching brief' at the site to support Council officials who sought to enforce the order.

However, at approximately 5pm last night, Gardai and council officials left the area and up to 100 people attended a celebration in the marquee

Gardai have confirmed that where they identify potential breaches of the public health regulations a file is prepared for the DPP in each case or a Fixed Payment Notice is issued where appropriate.

They have also confirmed that they will especially enforce action where issues around travel are detected.
