A 50 year old man, killed following an altercation outside a Longford pub last year, died after suffering severe brain injuries.

Acting state pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan was giving evidence in the trial of a man accused of killing Noel McGann who died three days after being struck in the car park of Leavey's in Foigha on August 1st.

Dr Mulligan outlined to Longford Circuit Court, sitting in Mullingar, that the 50 year old died as a result of a traumatic head injury after a fall and there were no contributory factors.

The pathologist discovered a significant head injury to the rear left of the skull and also healing bruising to the front right right cheek near the nose which was described as the point of impact.

Mr McGann was unresponsive when he was admitted to Mullingar hospital just after 6.30pm on the day of the assault and ranked three out of 15 on the Glasgow Coma Scale which measures lucidity and responsiveness.

The post mortem also revealed bleeding and swelling on the brain and a skull fracture.

The deceased also had a blood alcohol level of 355 milligrammes percent which the pathologist said would have had an "undue affect" on reactions and balance at the time of the incident.

She noted the level of alcohol was subjective to the person's history with consuming drink and the drink driving limit was 50 milligrammes percent

Gerard Melia, of Derrygowna, Lanesboro, has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.
