A Longford day care centre is hoping that there will be no reduction in funding for 2021 given the restrictions imposed on opening facilities for older people facing rural isolation.

Ballymahon Day Care Centre like others across the Shannonside Northern Sound region has been closed since March.

Staff and volunteers have been working remotely to support people who attend the centre, organising groceries items for pharmacies and other wishes, such as placing flowers of graves of loved ones.

Manager of Ballymahon Day Care Breda Greaves says the situation is extremely upsetting for many who would be living in isolation for many years and who have had nowhere to go and meet people since early this year.

She says while they have been lucky to have had some fundraising left to cover some costs, they are hoping that the HSE will ensure all allocations received for this year are matched for next year so that the work can continue and the centres can be ready to reopen.
