The Monaghan man is believed to have slipped into the water on Sunday morning.

The man who died in a tragic accident in Carrick-on-Shannon over the weekend has been named locally as Enda McCarney from County Monaghan.

The Scotstown native is believed to have entered the water on Sunday morning and a major search got underway throughout Sunday afternoon in the town.

His remains were recovered a few hours later and a post mortem is due to take place today at Sligo University Hospital.

Gardai are treating the death of the father of five as a tragic incident and a file is being prepared for the county coroner.
