Man killed in Longford road crash named locally

Gardai are asking who may have travelled the road at the time of the crash to contact them.

The young man killed in a road crash in Longford on New Year's Day has been named locally.

Ciaran McDonnell, from Longford town, died following a single vehicle crash at Clonfin between Ballinalee and Granard yesterday morning.

Gardai in Granard are appealing for witnesses following the crash on the R194 in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services rushed to an area just off the Granard to Balinalee road at Clonfin around 10.40am, where they discovered a car partially submerged in water.

A search of the scene, involving members of the Garda Water Unit took place, and the body of a man in his 20s was recovered.

His remains were removed to Mullingar Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place in the coming hours.

Gardaí in Granard are appealing for witnesses and for any motorist who was driving on the route around the time and may have dash-cam footage to make it available to them or to call 043 6687660.
