Man, aged 94, dies after boating accident in Carrickfergus

The boat began to sink at around 3pm yesterday.

Police in the north are appealing for information following the death of a man after a boat sank in waters off Carrickfergus yesterday.

94 year old Jim Allen from Belfast died, after what's being treated as a tragic drowning incident.

Mr Allen and another man in his 70s were on board the boat when it launched from the yacht club off the Sydenham Road at lunchtime yesterday.

At around 3pm, it was reported by a mayday call that the boat was starting to take in water.

PSNI Detective Inspector Stephanie Finlay says: "Ultimately, both men entered the water when the boat capsized around one-and-a-half miles from Carrickfergus near Greenisland.....but sadly, and despite the best efforts of emergency crews, the man in his 90s died.

She went on to say that at this stage, the incident was being treated as a tragic drowning.

The man in his 70s was treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

The Maritime Accident Investigation Branch is helping police inquiries into what caused the boat to sink - and police are appealing for witnesses.
