The Prison service has confirmed that it is currently conducting a major review of health services in all facilities, including Castlerea.
Earlier this week a 2018 report from the jail's Visiting Committee expressed concerns over the availability of mental health services for inmates.
The Committee also noted that locum GP services were being provided.
In a statement to Shannonside FM, the IPS has confirmed that a daily GP service is provided in Castlerea, and they are conducting a comprehensive Health Needs Assessment across all prisons which is considering services including primary care so that the current and future health care needs of prisoners are met.
The IPS has also confirmed that an on-site forensic mental health service has been available in Castlerea since August 2019.
