Major local increase in abandoned dogs following end of Covid restrictions

Animal welfare organisations and local authority dog services are being overwhelmed by the numbers being abandoned.

There's been a significant increase in abandoned dogs at Longford dog pound in the last month, compared to the same time last year.

Dog warden Hilary Robinson says many people who took on dogs during the last two years have now realised they don't have enough time to exercise them properly, especially if they're a bigger breed.

She says there's also a big problem with some unscrupulous people who were breeding dogs simply as a money making exercise during Covid, and who are now dumping the mothers.

Hilary says that as fast as she manages to get a batch of up to 10 dogs re-homed in the UK, there are another ten arriving almost immediately to take their place:
