Simon Communities of Ireland say that vulnerable tenants are being priced out of the market.

There were no homes available to rent in Leitrim or Athlone last month for those receiving housing assistance payments.

The lack of availability of homes for renters on the HAP in the region is of serious concern according to a major homeless charity.

A new report from Simon Communities of Ireland shows an almost 80 per cent reduction in the supply of rental accommodation for those on the support since June of this year.

The newly launched report has warned that the lack of available properties will see local and national homeless rates rise in the short term if nothing is done.

The survey examined 16 areas across the country over the course of three days including Athlone and Leitrim.

Data gathered from property website Daft.ie on the days of the survey show, there were no properties available to rent in both areas that fell under HAP limits.

Those receiving the support must find their own accommodation in the private rented market and the landlord must agree to rent the property to the HAP tenant.

Rising rental prices are forcing vulnerable local tenants out of the market according to the charity, with homeless levels forecasted to continue growing unless action is taken.
