The incident took place on Sunday.

A Longford woman who was dragged into the Royal Canal by her dog, is thanking those who saved her life.

Tracey Heighten was driving her mobility scooter on Sunday close to Abbeyshrule when her dog Holly, who was tied around her waist pulled her into the water.

A number of walkers came to her assistance, phoning the emergency services and wrapping her in blankets and jackets.

Tracey was taken to Mullingar Hospital where she spent two days recovering and was treated for low oxygen levels.

She told the Joe Finnegan Show that the passerbys were heroes and she is thankful she will get to spend Christmas with her family.
