There's been a call for lifeguards at the location.

Three Longford teenagers are reported to be recovering today following a serious incident at Strandhill beach yesterday.

It's understood the three got into difficulty around 3 o' clock yesterday's afternoon and were fortunate to have been rescued by members of the local Strandhill Surf School.

The beach at Strandhill is not officially approved for swimming and there are no lifeguards on duty in the area.

It's understood the girls had waded out into the sea but were in just over waist depth water when they got into difficulty.

The near miss for the Longford girls follows a recent call at Sligo County Council for lifeguards to be allowed to patrol the popular destination.

David Mulcahy from Strandhill Surf School who was one of those involved in yesterday's rescue says it was a very close call.

''As we were paddling out a woman told us there was a third, there was a local surfer in the water who had picked up another one of the girls and then Michael paddled out and he couldn't see the third person, he was paddling around for a little while. I took the first girl in and he had just happened to find her by chance, anymore time wasted and it could have been a different story today.''
