There's optimism that Ireland has now passed the latest surge of Covid infection

Longford TD Joe Flaherty says he wants to see businesses being given a good amount of preparation time for re-opening or extending their business hours.

His comments come as it looks increasingly likely that restrictions on the hospitality sector and indoor gatherings are set to be substantially eased.

Leo Varadkar has told his party he wants to set a deadline of March 31st to end almost all legal Covid restrictions.

He told a meeting of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party the waning severity of the Omicron variant combined with large amounts of immunity in the population mean restrictions should be eased quickly over the coming weeks.

However, he noted some measures like mask wearing, staying at home if you're symptomatic and Covid passes for international travel will likely stay into the summer.

The Fianna Fail Deputy says he hopes that some restrictions could ease by the 26th of this month, or if not, that they will be given a definite date to work towards in the days afterwards.
