A number of schools across Longford are understood to have closed this morning as a result of a major interruption to water supply.

Longford County Council has declared an emergency outage in areas such as Edgeworthstown; Newtownforbes; Longford Town; Drumlish; Ballinalee and Clondra after an electrical fault at the Lough Forbes water treatment plant.

The issue was first reported at 9pm last night and hundreds of householders and companies are without water.

Templemichael College has closed today and has confirmed that in the interests of health and safety "students and teachers will be working from home via online/remote learning."

No estimated time for the restoration of supply has been announced and it's not yet clear if water tankers will be supplied as a result of the outage.
