Longford records lowest average age of new mothers country wide

Over 1,600 births were recorded in the Shannonside Region in 2020

Longford had the lowest average age for new mothers nationally in 2020.

It comes as the latest CSO figures show a steady rise in the average age for new mothers.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 1 thousand 624 births were registered in the Shannonside region in 2020.

Longford had 529 births and the average age of the mother was 31.8 years old, the lowest in the country.

The birth rate for the county was 12.5 births per 100,000 population, the highest across the 3 counties.

Leitrim had 381 births with the average age of the mother at 33.2, the highest in the region, with a birth rate of 11.5 per 100,000

Roscommon had the lowest birth rate in the region at 10.6 per 100,000 but the highest number of births with 724. The average age of the mother was 32.9.

The national average age for mothers was 33.1, up from the 29.6 in 1990 and 1970 respectively, and above the EU average of 30.

7 births across the 3 counties were by mothers aged 45 or over.

In 2020, over 56 thousand babies were born, down on the 2019 figure of 59 thousand .
