Longford principal says administration duties are proving impossible

The issue is being discussed at the National Association of Principals and Assistant Principals conference, which is being held in Galway today.

A Longford school principal believes the time demands on senior management of schools is proving impossible for many people working in education.

A survey released this week reveals that some school leaders are spending over 60 hours on week on carrying out administration duties.

Today is day one of a conference being held by the Association of Principals and Deputy principals in Galway.

Des Cullen is principal of Moyne Community school for over a decade. He says the challenge facing principals are very time consuming.

''The Financial Administration, our administration, reporting to the department, reporting on child protection, reporting on anti bullying, reporting on school attendance, dealing with other agencies and the administration that goes with that has significantly increased, you know, even with the financial end of it, like I mean, it's grown phenomenally in my years as being a principal. And I can see that it's eaten into my time more and more.''
