A Longford businessman who has applied to build a multi million euro student accommodation campus in Athlone says he hopes work could begin later this year if it gets the go-ahead.
Mark Cunningham has lodged an application with An Bord Pleanala for the new complex because at over 100 housing units, it qualified as a Strategic Housing Development which can be fast-tracked.
The eleven acre site is located beside TUS Athlone and would involve a total of 60 houses and 62 apartments, as well as a crèche.
An Bord Pleanala is due to make a decision on the plans within four months.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon, Mark Cunningham says that being a past student of Athlone RTC, he would be very happy to bring purpose built accommodation for young people to the town:
