A move to deduct rent from social welfare payments is being considered.

A Longford Councillor is welcoming news that a working group has been set up to look at deducting rents from social welfare payments.

The power to deduct rents directly from social welfare payments was included in the Housing Act in 2013 but it was never enacted.

The move is now being considered in order to deal with high levels of arrears in some councils across the country.

Fine Gael Councillor Paraic Brady proposed two years ago that Longford Council adopt a similar policy to deal with damage being caused to housing stock, as well as rent arrears.

He says he'd like to see the measures brought in to tackle the serial offenders who don't pay their rent and cause damage to houses.
