Longford Fine Gael councillor Peggy Nolan says the latest HIQA report which is critical of some aspects of care at St Joesph's Hospital only serves to highlight the need for work to begin on a new 43 bedroom and bathroom upgrade at the site.

The findings of the latest HIQA inspection of St Joseph's Older Persons Care centre in Longford is a reminder of how important the upgrade to the care home will be according to local councillor Peggy Nolan.

While many areas at the centre were designated compliant or substantially compliant, and inspectors found that residents enjoyed a good quality of life, the facility recorded several non-compliance's in the areas such as premises, fire safety and staff training.

In February, Longford County Council granted planning permission for a new 43 bedroomed unit as well as day rooms activity and therapy rooms and staff support facilities.

Councillor Nolan says the work will address all concern over the premises itself.
