The latest violent incident in Longford town happened shortly after three o' clock yesterday afternoon at a premises on Main Street

A Longford Councillor believes the highest authorities must act to tackle an escalating violent feud in Longford town.

Councillor Gerry Warnock made the comments following a serious stabbing incident on Main Street in the town on Tuesday afternoon.

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Another man in his 20's was arrested in relation to the incident and is being questioned by Gardai.

The Independent Councillor is calling for more Garda resources to be put in place and believes the courts must take a firmer stance when dealing with these type of cases.

He says it's disheartening to see this level of violence in the town.

It's absolutely disgusting for the normal, decent people of Longford Town to be held to ransom by a small group of absolute thugs who have no regard for their person, have no regard for the people that are trying to run a business, and have no regard for the reputation of what is a fantastic town.

I would urge the authorities to really sit down and try and tackle this incident as hard as they possibly can, but the only people who can do that, is through the courts.
