A Longford councillor is calling on the Government to ensure the new system replacing direct provision will not leave families in limbo for years on

A Longford councillor is calling on the Government to ensure the new system replacing direct provision will not leave families in limbo for years on end.

In a white paper published today, the Department of Equality says the current system will come to an end in 2024.

From then, asylum-seekers will stay in a reception centre for a maximum of four months, before getting housed in the community.

Longford County Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi says applicants for refugee status cannot be left years while their case is processed.

The Fianna Faíl councillor has welcomed the proposed end of the direct provision system, which she's branded as an industry profiteering on the suffering of others.
