The issue of the length of time it takes councils to turnaround property after it becomes empty is something which is coming increasingly under the spotlight as the housing crisis continues

Local authority tenants who've made unauthorised alternations to their council property face court action unless the works are reversed.

That's according to Director of Services John Brannigan who says the council will engage with any tenant they find to have altered council property.

Speaking at the January meeting of the Longford Municipal District, the director warned that while tenants will be given the opportunity to reverse works, non-compliance will result in court action.

The issue was discussed as part of a presentation on the turnaround rates of council housing between tenants.

According to council officials repair works to properties, including the removal or reversal of non permitted works, can result in delays for council houses being made available to the housing list.
