Longford candidate says barriers need to be removed for women in politics

The human rights and community activist has worked with the She Her Elected campaign to urge women to consider a career in politics.

Significant work must be done ahead of future local elections to ensure women do not face barriers entering politics according to a Longford candidate.
Independent Sadia Athar was the last eliminated candidate in the Longford LEA, with her exit from count 14 electing the three final councillors in the town.

The human rights and community activist has worked with the See Her Elected campaign to urge women to consider a career in politics.
Local Election 2024 has seen just 9 women elected in the Shannonside region over the weekend, out of a total of 54 seats.
Speaking at the count centre yesterday following her elimination, Sadia says there is much work to be done on representation:
