Cian McPhillips won the 1500 metre gold medal at the European U20 Championships in Tallinn in July.

A new centre of excellence for athletics in Longford is primed to harness the county's natural talent according to local award-winning runner.

The centre at St Mel's College in Longford will include top-level training infrastructure for multiple different disciplines under the athletics umbrella including long jump, hurdles and high-intensity training.

Following recent consultation with the Diocesan Trust, which owns the property, new plans are being developed to add a 400-metre outdoor running track around the pitch adjoining the centre.
