Leitrim Councillor Thomas Mulligan has revealed he decided to quit politics partly because of abuse towards him on social media.

The Mohill man has been a Councillor for 34 years but has opted not to stand in June's local elections.

Annaduff native Maeve Reynolds was last night confirmed as Fine Gael's only candidate for the Carrick-on-Shannon local electoral area.

Councillor Mulligan told the selection convention he is bowing out partly due to abuse he got for supporting public realm enhancement works in Mohill.
