Castlerea locals urged to write to oppose permanent closure of fire station after blaze at derelict building

People in Castlerea are being urged to send letters opposing to the permanent closure of Castlerea fire station to the Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council.

According to local reports relayed to to Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane, it took about a half an hour for fire services to attend the scene of a fire this morning at a derelict building located within meters of the former fire station.

Eugene Cummins announced his decision to permanently cease operations in Castlerea in July following an independently reviewed report which stated that Roscommon is adequately served by existing fire services.

Deputy Kerrane is providing letters of opposition to the closure for people to sign which will be sent directly to the Chief Executive

She says she is also continuing her efforts to take it to Minister Darragh O'Brien who has responsibility in this area.
