A European expert on decarbonisation believes that significant extra funding could be allocated for the Just Transition plan for the midlands from Europe.

Irish Rural Link hosted a special webinar this morning with Just Transition commissioner Kieran Mulvey, as well as CE of Offaly County Council Anne Marie Delaney and Robert Pollock, Senior Advisor with START Team.

Concerns were raised that the current €11 m fund available for communities to move away from peat prediction as part of the 'brown to green strategy' may not be enough to help communities shocked by the fast-pace of change

Kieran Mulvey in his report is hopeful that funding of up to €25m would be made available and Mr Pollock believes that Europe could be also used to provide more money in terms of special schemes for local communities:
