New Bishop-elect of Kilmore hopes re-opening of churches will help renew faith

The new Bishop of Kilmore says the reopening of churches may lead to the rejuvenation of faith.

Fr Martin Hayes was appointed to the position this morning following the retirement of Bishop Leo O’Reilly at the end of 2018.

The Thurles native was ordained in 1989 and has served in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly since.

Papal Nuncio Archbishop Jude Thaddaus Okolo made the announcement at mass in Cavan this morning.

He praised Bishop O’Reilly and Monsignor Liam Kelly, who has acted as Diocesan Administrator.

Fr Hayes said he was pleased to start on the first day of restrictions being lifted and was in awe of the preparation for today’s celebration.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound News outside the Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim in Cavan town, Bishop-elect Hayes said people got closer to God during Covid-19.
