The local teacher has represented Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Kildare and Meath on the INTO Central Executive Committee.

A Roscommon native has been appointed as the new president of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation.

Carmel Browne, who is currently deputy principal of Melview National School in Longford, was elected Vice President at the INTO conference in April.

The local teacher has represented Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Kildare and Meath on the INTO Central Executive Committee since 2015.

Carmel will now take the position of President of the teachers union, with the term beginning later this year.

Speaking to Shannonside FM following her appointment Carmel said she will strive to highlight and fight the challenges facing teachers today:
