The call comes as many towns in the region faced bank closures in recent weeks.

A Shannonside Northern Sound TD says it's time for Ireland to adopt legislation to allow Credit Unions greater flexibility to provide banking services.

Sligo Leitrim North Roscommon Independent TD Marian Harkin has introduced a Bill to the Dáil proposing that local CU Boards be allowed introduce services locally without the requirement to make individual applications to the Central Bank.

Deputy Harkin says it's extremely important to assist credit unions to offer the full range of services previously provided by the main banks, especially in local areas that have seen their local branches close.
