Local students congratulated in Seanad for international Junk Kouture win

The message behind the outfit designed by the Elphin students was one of encouragement for women to become involved in STEM subjects.

A local senator has congratulated the Elphin Community College students who recently won big at the World Junk Kouture finals held in Monaco.

Mary McNulty, Martha Nugent and Vanessa Kielty won the STEAM Award, Together with Microsoft.

The entries have to be manufactured from unwanted and recycled items, with the Elphin outfit, titled STEMinist being made up of medical tubing, a dissembled builders hat and rusted corrugated iron.

Speaking in the Seanad, Fianna Fáil senator Eugene Murphy praised the achievement of the local students:
