Delays in the release of Post Mortem results is causing distress to families across the country according to a local solicitor. In many cases it now takes up to six months for the results of a post mortem examination to be released. The exams take place when the cause of death is unknown or following a sudden, violent of unexpected death.
The results must be complete for an inquest to take place and a death certificate to be issued. Mary Frances Fahy is a solicitor with Fahy Neilan Solicitors in Ballaghaderreen in Roscommon. She says that a shortage of pathologists and resources, along with a backlog in inquests from the pandemic has resulted in long waits for families.
