Doubt was cast on the project last month when the contractors Roadbridge went into receivership.

A Roscommon Senator says the Government is fully committed to the progression of the N5 Ballaghaderreen Scramogue by-pass.

The head of the TII Peter Walsh also stated at a meeting yesterday that the project may need government approval to proceed again due to rising costs.

However, following a meeting with the Taoiseach and Public Expenditure Minister last night, Senator Eugene Murphy says while there may be some delays, Government are unquestionably behind the project.

Speaking to Shannonside FM Senator Murphy believes its vital the road proceeds in the short term for safety and economic reasons.

I wouldn't be fatalistic about it at all. The project definitely will go ahead and I have that total commitment from the Public Expenditure Minister and from the Taoiseach and I'll be focused on that to make sure that the delays are as limited as possible in the interest of safety, overall safety and in the interest of opening up our economy. We do need to get that work done.
