The average number of children per class at national school level locally is 22

The Shannonside Region recorded some of the lowest average primary school class sizes in the country last year.

Figures presented by Minister for Education Norma Foley show that 22 was the average number of students per class locally in the 2022/23 school year.

Levels across the region have dropped over the last three years, with Leitrim recording the current highest average at 23 students per national school class.

That's followed by Roscommon and Longford who share average class sizes at 21 students according to the data, some of the smallest in the country.

Carlow, Dun Laoghaire and Fingal all saw the highest levels nationwide, where schools are dealing with over 25 children per primary school classroom.
