Local hospitals record increase in Covid positive patients

Nationally over 4,500 healthcare workers are absent due to the virus, with staff shortages causing problems for the HSE. 

The number of covid positive patients in local hospitals is steadily rising week on week.

According to the most recent HSE figures, there are 279 people receiving treatment with or for Covid-19 at hospitals across the Shannonside Northern Sound region today.

It's part of a national figure of 1,392 covid positive people in hospital's nationwide, up 50 in 24 hours.

Local hospitals have seen an increase of 52 patients with the virus compared to this day last week.

Galway University Hospital is reporting the highest numbers in covid wards, with 64 people testing positive on site, up 15 from last week.

That's  followed by Sligo University Hospital, where 46 people are hospitalised with the virus or who have tested positive while receiving separate treatment.

The Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore is dealing with a significant increase in positive patient numbers today, with 38 people admitted to the hospital compared to 17 last week.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe report 31 people in covid wards up from 23  seven days ago.

Mullingar Hospital has the lowest amount locally according to the latest figures at 21, but is still reporting an increase when compared to last week.
