Gardai are expecting a very busy for days as people enjoy the first lengthy bank holiday of the year.

Local Gardaí are urging the public to consider the consequences of their actions when it comes to drink driving over the bank holiday weekend.

With the new extended bank holiday encompassing St Patrick's Day this year, Gardaí are concerned about the effect heavy socialising will have on road safety.

Sergeant Andrew Haran from Athlone Garda Station says people planning to go out over the weekend should organise safe transport home ahead of time:
