At the end of 2021 there were just 47,721 electric vehicles registered in Ireland.

A Leitrim EV owner believes charging points should be as accessible as petrol stations across the region.

Since purchasing a battery operated car Kevin Fitzsimons has seen a significant amount of savings when it comes to fuel costs, saving at least 50 euro a week.

However the Dromod resident believes more reliable and fast chargers should be installed to encourage people to purchase the environmentally friendly vehicle.

Kevin's call comes following his experience with a broken charging point in Edgeworthstown on Sunday.

''I went to Edgeworthstown and the charging point is the new charging point that's been installed by a private installer and again, connected everything did everything. I had to go online to get an app to register with them. And it didn't work. The charger didn't work. This is a problem with the public charging network. There can be chargers that are occupied by other cars that are not EV cars.''
