A Longford based charity has called for stricter enforcement of animal cruelty laws.

It comes as a video surfaced online of a donkey being dragged by the neck behind a vehicle in Co.Offaly over the weekend.

Hungry Horse Outside, an equine charity based in Newtownforbes, was called to rescue the animal and a Garda investigation has been launched.

Hillary Robinson from Hungry Horse Outside says the donkey is now recovering but strict punishments are needed.

"The lads went up to see if there was anything they could do. The guards were insisting that all animals were to be taken from the location including the little white donkey that was seen in the video who is recovering nicely but still very sore and will need a lot of dental work. There will be serious repercussions to this. There's plenty of laws and legislations there but it's time to get these through the courts and the only way these people are going to learn is: heavy in the pocket".
