Local dioceses pledge accommodation for Ukrainian refugees

It's understood 1,500 beds in church-owned properties around Ireland will be acquired by the Department of Integration to house refugees in the coming weeks.

Dioceses across the Shannonisde region have pledged a number of vacant properties in an effort to house Ukrainian refugees.

It's comes as the Government announced on Wednesday it would ask religious orders and congregations to supply spaces that are going unused.

Four properties across Roscommon and Sligo have been offered by the Diocese of Elphin.

Two are currently occupied while a third house is expected to welcome Ukrainian citizens by the end of this month.

A room in the Bishop's house in the Diocese of Achonry has also been pledged until the end of August.

In April of this year two parishes in the Ardagh/Clonmacnoise sought approval to make a house available to the Red Cross, while a town presbytery was also offered.
