A Longford Councillor believes the cost of rebooting the Lough Ree power station would not be feasible.

Several calls have been made in recent days to re-open the Lanseborough plant following fears of electricity blackouts this winter.

Councillor Gerard Farrell says there was a lack foresight when the decision was made in 2020 to cease operations at the facility.

When in use the station generated almost 150 Megawatts of power, ranking as the third largest peat-fired power station in the country.

While Councillor Farrell believes it would be a no brainer to restart the plant, he says the finance needed and supply of peat may not be possible.

" Its a no brainer but unfortunately the same hindsight is 20-20 vision heading into another winter not knowing if we can keep the lights on and i suppose the costs involved in getting the plant up and running again would make it not feasible and the damage was done when it was closed."
