The German discount supermarket chain has appealed the refusal for the new 10 million euro store to the higher planning body.

Lidl has appealed Westmeath County Council's decision to grant planning permission for a new store in Athlone.

The German supermarket was refused planning for a new €10m store at the site of the Colm Quinn Motorstore on the Dublin Road in late June.

The Council cited that the 'out of town' location of the project' and traffic issues in the area as reasons for refusal.

The supermarket chain has now appealed the refusal to An Bord Pleanala with a decision expected from the planning inspectorate by the 23rd of November.
