A Leitrim man who sat the Leaving Cert German exam this year says he's very happy he took on the challenge and would encourage others to always try new things.
John King who's a former maths and physics teacher at Drumshanbo Vocational School says languages weren't a strong point of his but he started learning German due to his daughter settling there some years ago.
He has an even better reason for speaking the language now after the arrival of a grandson in the last year and John says he's very happy with his H4 result in this year's exams.
The former teacher says he believes people who are nearing the end of their working lives will usually benefit from trying their hand at something new…
"When you leave your job, there's young people taking over, and you better be doing something new. In Drumshanbo, they started doing musicals, they won more volleyball titles in the next five years then they ever did when I was there. You know, the place goes on, so you better have some new ideas to keep yourself going."
