Leitrim forest cover dropped by almost a half last year

While Leitrim and Roscommon recorded a drop, Longford's forestry doubled.

160 hectares of Leitrim were covered in forestry last year.

The county's total forest cover reduced by a total of 44% last year with a drop in plantation also recorded in Leitrim, but a doubling of tree cover recorded in Longford.

'Forest Statistics - Ireland 2021' is a compilation of statistics on the forest estate and the forest industry in Ireland.

It reveals that the total afforestation in county Leitrim last year was 160 hectares, down from 289 hectares in 2019.

County Roscommon also recorded a drop in its total forest cover from 315 hectares to 273 while Longford's totally acreage for trees doubled, from 62 to 124 hectares.

114 hectares of land in Leitrim is conifer plantation, while 45 hectares is broadleaf.

197 hectares of land in Roscommon is conifer with 97 hectares in Longford described as coniferous.

Responding to the report, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett said the decreasing trend in the area being afforested annually is something that needs to be addressed and new forestry is essential to meeting not only our economic objectives but also our climate change targets and our aims in terms of enhancing biodiversity.
