The rising input costs of diesel, fertiliser and feedstuffs are pitting major pressure on farmers across the country

A Leitrim councillor is calling on the Government to provide more supports to farmers due to rising input costs.

The call comes ahead of a meeting today between Minister Charlie McConalogue and farm organisations, where it's expected he will ask farmers to plant grains.

It's an attempt to offset food shortage worries across Europe, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine has impacted supplies from both nations.

However, Councillor Paddy Farrell believes there's worry across the sector with some fertiliser companies unable to give a price for the product due to its daily cost increase.

Speaking at this month's council meeting the Leitrim native called for an urgent message to be sent to the Agriculture Minister over price concerns.
