The farmer and chairman of Drumshanbo Mart was first elected in 1991 and has held his seat at every election since then.

Independent Gerry Dolan is set to quit politics after 33 consecutive years as a councillor in Co Leitrim.

He has confirmed he will not to be contesting June's local elections for personal reasons.

Until 2014, he served in the Dromahaire Local Electoral Area but moved to the Ballinamore LEA in 2014 when the constituency boundaries were changed, and was re-elected there in 2019.

Fellow councillor Paddy O'Rourke, from Carrigallen, has been paying tribute.
