The Irish Universities Association says the State exams and results are too late to allow colleges and first year students to prepare for the new academic year.

The Irish Universities Association says later rounds of CAO offers will create challenges for colleges and students in September.

This year's Leaving Cert results will be released on Friday 2nd of September, with CAO offers for third level places expected to begin the following week.

The results process has been delayed again this year by almost three weeks, due to the impact of the Covid pandemic.

Director General of the Irish Universities Association and Roscommon native, Jim Miley, says colleges will do their best to support all new students who are due to start in September:

''First year's will be brought in as soon as possible once offers are made. The challenge is that once the results come out, you've CAO offers a few days later but then their second and third round offers so it will be past the middle of September before some students get their offers and therefore likely to be towards the end of September before they can start. Our colleges will do whatever they can to support students, albeit in their delayed process.''
